Military alliance?

I quite often wonder why, if there were an alien race far more advanced than humanity out there and they were visiting the Earth, why don't they just eradicate humanity and take over the planet? Why aren't they here to steal or plunder our resources, much as humanity would likely do to another planet?

It's possible they just have different morals and views, or it's entirely possible that they genuinely wish to help/guide us, but also, could it just be that they have a military-based alliance with Earth-based senior governments and have agreed some sort of truce? I find it hard to imagine why an alien race would agreed to such a truce, given that they would clearly be much more advanced than us as a civilisation if they were able to get here... that being said, I suppose if they did have good intentions and wanted to help that might be a reason...

I have to ask you, why would a superior power align with a piddly little Earth based government when they could just course-correct the whole world at once? Unless they enjoy the aspect of playing the game of Risk with earthlings as the playing pieces.
